The Society/Forward in Faith

THE SOCIETY (or more fully, The Society under the patronage of Saint Wilfrid and Saint Hilda) is an ecclesial body, led by a Council of Bishops. The purposes of the Society are:

  • to promote and maintain catholic teaching and practice within the Church of England
  • to provide episcopal oversight to which churches, institutions and individuals will freely submit themselves
  • to guarantee a ministry in the historic apostolic succession in which they can have confidence

The parishes of The Society enjoy a relationship of full communion not only with their bishop but also with all the other parishes of The Society. In most cases this relationship is established by passing a resolution under the House of Bishops’ Declaration.

All Saints has been placed under the spiritual and Pastoral care of a Society Bishop, Jonathan Goodall, Bishop of Ebbsfleet, and is affiliated to the Society.

The Society is an ecclesial body, not a membership organization. It is supported by Forward in Faith and administered by its Director.

FORWARD IN FAITH was founded in November 1992, following the General Synod’s approval of the legislation permitting the ordination of women to the priesthood. Its first National Assembly, which adopted a constitution for the organization, was held in 1994.

Forward in Faith is the membership organization which supports and finances the work of The Society under the patronage of S. Wilfrid and S. Hilda. It also supports the work of the Catholic Group in General Synod and encourages participation in the synodical structures of the Church of England.

Forward in Faith has branches in most Church of England dioceses, and its structure also includes Forward in Faith – Scotland. Its counterpart in Wales is Credo Cymru – Forward in Faith Wales.

Forward in Faith is a democratically-structured organization, governed by a Constitution approved and amended by the National Assembly. The Assembly, which meets annually, elects the Chairman of Forward in Faith, the Vice-Chairmen, and a policy-making Council.

Forward in Faith is a registered charity (no. 1057246). It is governed by an Executive Committee, who are the Trustees of the Charity. The Forward in Faith offices are at 2A The Cloisters, Gordon Square, London WC1H 0AG. The Eucharist is celebrated in the English Chapel of the Church of Christ the King in Gordon Square each weekday at 12.30 pm.

All Saints was not a Forward in Faith Parish, though many members of its parish family are members of this organisation.
