On Sundays the robed choir sings at the Solemn Mass and Choral Evensong (with Benediction once a month) using a variety of mass settings, motets, responses, canticles and anthems. The repertoire is extensive and varied including works from Renaissance up to present day composers. The choir also sings on various important Feast days throughout the liturgical year which include the impressive ‘Advent Procession’, Christmas Carol Service, Candlemass, Holy Week and Corpus Christi. Demanding, interesting and appropriate music is performed frequently by a dedicated team of volunteer singers. Occasionally, on days such as Easter Day or the Passiontide meditation on Palm Sunday evening, a small string group have helped to accompany appropriate music such as a mass by F J Haydn or a cantata by D. Buxtehude. A sample music list is included…see link.
With such a firm commitment to church music, we encourage children from the age of about 7 to sing, building them up into talented choristers within a structured environment. They are encouraged to follow the syllabus for and obtain the choral awards of the Royal School of Church Music if they so wish. All Saints’ has appointed young organists as Organ Scholars in the recent past and welcomes organists to visit. Rehearsals are held on Friday evenings, 6.45pm for young singers and the full choir at 7.30pm until 9pm. In addition there is a short rehearsal before each service.
Come and Sing with us
All Saints’ Choir maintains a high musical standard and sings much music on relatively limited rehearsal time. We welcome new singers. Ideally you should have reasonable sight-reading skills and be prepared to regularly attend choir practices and sung services. We are very friendly and supportive in helping new members to come up to speed with our music. Our Director of Music will be delighted to hear from anyone who is enthusiastic and enjoys singing.
